Wyoming highway tunnel pileup leaves two dead and forces closure of major east-west interstate

Two people were killed in a multi-vehicle crash inside a highway tunnel on Interstate 80 in Green River, Wyoming. The crash prompted authorities to shut down traffic in both directions on the major coast-to-coast roadway. Additional injuries were reported, but specific details were not provided. The tunnel was evacuated, and black smoke was seen billowing from an exit tunnel following the crash. The Sweetwater County Sheriff’s Office described it as a multivehicle pileup with an active fire and explosion threat. Governor Mark Gordon called the crash a tragedy and expressed his prayers for the victims and their families. There was no estimate for when the roadway would reopen as highway personnel inspected the tunnel for damage. The region was under a National Weather Service hazardous weather outlook for snow, and the transportation department reported slick and slush-lined conditions on parts of Interstate 80. Green River, where the crash occurred, is a city with a population of over 11,000 in the southwest corner of the state. Representatives from a local hospital and the area medical examiner did not immediately provide information on the number of injured individuals.
