The 126th South Carolina General Assembly began its two-year session on January 14th in Columbia. With 32 rookie lawmakers, including 13 in the Senate and 19 in the House, joining the session, the 170-member body is dominated by 126 Republicans, creating a super majority for the first time in over a century. This gives the legislature significant power to push through changes with strong partisan support.
More than 800 bills have been pre-filed on a variety of topics such as sports betting and cursive writing curriculum. Gov. Henry McMaster has also outlined his plans for the fiscal year, including his recommendations for the 2025-26 executive budget, which will need approval from lawmakers.
McMaster is set to become South Carolina’s longest-serving governor in history during this session, adding an interesting dynamic to the proceedings. With the legislative session resuming after an 8-month hiatus, lawmakers are expected to pick up where they left off and address bills that failed to pass previously. This new session promises to be filled with potential changes and developments as the General Assembly tackles key issues facing the state.
