South Carolina aims to establish a state DOGE

South Carolina Republican lawmakers have introduced a joint resolution to create a South Carolina Department of Government Efficiency. Rep. Davey Hiott of Pickens County states that South Carolina’s state government is already transparent and accountable due to the balanced budget requirement in the state constitution. The proposed department would review the state’s spending of $9 billion taxpayer dollars to ensure efficiency and accountability.

House Speaker Murrell Smith and Sen. Stephen Goldfinch are among the lawmakers supporting the resolution. Once passed by the legislature, Governor Henry McMaster has indicated that he will sign it into law. Rep. Hiott anticipates opposition regarding concerns about unelected individuals having access to financial records, but believes that the department, comprised of nine knowledgeable members with management finance backgrounds, will benefit the state.

Despite potential challenges, Hiott emphasizes that South Carolina’s finances are already transparent, with all expenditure information readily available online. The creation of the South Carolina Department of Government Efficiency aims to further enhance accountability and ensure that taxpayer money is spent wisely.
