Bill proposed in South Carolina to prohibit smoking in vehicles when children are present

A bipartisan group of senators in South Carolina introduced a bill this week that would ban smoking in cars with children present. The bill, aimed at protecting kids from the harmful effects of secondhand smoke, is similar to legislation in a dozen other states. The bill’s sponsor, Sen. Darrell Jackson, emphasized the need to create a healthier environment for the next generation.

If passed, the bill would make it unlawful to smoke tobacco products in a motor vehicle with a child under 12 present, with violators facing a fine of up to $100 each time the offense occurs. Jackson previously introduced similar legislation in the state almost two decades ago, but it did not make it to the governor’s desk.

The bill aligns with research findings that smoking can shrink the brain and increase the risk of Alzheimer’s disease. Supporters hope this legislation will help protect children from unnecessary health risks and promote a smoke-free environment in vehicles.
