Maryland police arrest leader of cult group tied to numerous murders

Jack LaSota, the leader of a cultlike group connected to multiple killings, including the fatal shooting of a Border Patrol officer in Vermont, was arrested in Maryland for trespassing and other charges. LaSota, along with two others, was taken into custody in Frostburg. LaSota, who goes by “Ziz” and has warned about the dangers of artificial intelligence, also faces a firearms charge and obstructing and hindering charges.

It was reported that LaSota had died in a boating accident in August 2022, however, she and her associates have been associated with violent attacks since then. LaSota has not been charged in the killing of an 80-year-old man last month, but was found at the scene of the attack in 2022. Michelle Zajko, another member of the group, was also arrested in connection with the killing of her parents, but has since been released and not charged.

One of LaSota’s followers, Ophelia Bauckholt, was killed in an exchange of gunfire with Border Patrol agents in Vermont during a traffic stop. Bauckholt had pulled out a firearm during the incident. Another person riding with Bauckholt, Teresa Youngblut, has pleaded not guilty to firearms charges.

Federal authorities are investigating the circumstances of the shooting and have asked firearms dealers in Vermont for help in identifying any purchases made by Michelle Zajko, who has been identified as a person of interest. The case is ongoing, and the involvement of the cultlike group in these violent incidents continues to be investigated.
