Volvo and Polestar are partnering with Samsung to bring their electric vehicles in line with the latest technology. The EX90 and Polestar 3 models will soon be compatible with Samsung’s Digital Key technology, allowing owners to use their Samsung smartphones to lock, unlock, and start their cars without the need for the original key.
This new feature is set to roll out this month in various regions, including North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia. The Digital Key technology is available on select Galaxy smartphones and offers multiple ways to control the vehicle, including Ultra-wideband, Near Field Communication, and Bluetooth low energy.
Owners can leave their physical keys at home and rely on their smartphones to access their vehicles. However, certain features like remote locking and unlocking, as well as preconditioning the interior temperature, are still limited to the manufacturer’s smartphone app.
The Digital Key stored in the Samsung Wallet is secure, requiring a PIN and biometric check for added protection. In the event that a device with the Digital Key is lost or stolen, owners can remotely lock or delete the key using Samsung’s Find service. The technology also allows for key sharing among users.
Samsung Digital Key has already been implemented in select Audi, BMW, Mini, Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis vehicles in North America and is available on some BYD models in other markets. This collaboration between Volvo, Polestar, and Samsung highlights the ongoing efforts to integrate cutting-edge technology into the automotive industry.
