Former reality television star and ex-South Carolina Treasurer, Thomas Ravenel, recently announced that he will no longer be running in the 2026 South Carolina gubernatorial race. Ravenel, known for his role on Bravo’s “Southern Charm,” made the decision just four days after originally declaring his bid. Citing his role as a single father to three young children, Ravenel stated that it was more important for him to focus on his family at this time rather than pursue political office.
Ravenel had previously served as the state treasurer for less than a year in 2007 before facing legal troubles. In 2007, he was arrested and charged with cocaine possession with intent to distribute, resulting in a 10-month prison sentence and a hefty fine. Despite these setbacks, Ravenel had also made unsuccessful bids for a U.S. Senate seat in both 2004 and 2017.
While no other candidates have officially announced their campaigns for the 2026 South Carolina gubernatorial election, individuals such as Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette, Attorney General Alan Wilson, and U.S. Rep. Nancy Mace have all expressed interest in running. The election is scheduled to take place on Nov. 3, 2026, and it remains to be seen who will step up to fill the void left by Ravenel’s exit from the race.
