Scratching Off the Lottery: SC House Panel Uses Funds for K-12 Vouchers

The South Carolina House Ways and Means committee has finalized its version of the $14 billion state spending plan, which will be debated on the House floor starting March 10. The committee removed Education Lottery dollars as a funding source for K-12 school vouchers and added a trustee to manage the program. The bill passed out of committee 13-4, with Democrats in opposition. The House version of the bill seeks to use general fund dollars for funding. In other news, a bill requiring social media companies to verify the ages of account holders and restrict minors’ access without parental consent passed the House. The bill now heads to the Senate. A Senate Judiciary subcommittee will also meet to discuss an energy bill aimed at making the state more energy-generating friendly. Additionally, the 2026 governor’s race is heating up, with Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette garnering support from a super PAC linked to President Trump. Attorney General Alan Wilson and Congresswoman Nancy Mace are also potential contenders. Stay tuned for more updates on these key topics from the South Carolina Statehouse.
