Billionaire Elon Musk issued an ultimatum to federal employees, requiring them to justify their work completed in an email or face resignation. Federal employees have begun receiving an email from the Office of Personnel Management requesting a summary of their work for the week, with a deadline of Monday at 11:59 p.m. ET. Musk stated that failure to respond will be taken as a resignation, in line with President Trump’s instructions.
However, FBI Director Kash Patel instructed employees to pause responses to the email, stating that the FBI will review their work according to its own procedures. The American Federation of Government Employees condemned Musk and the Trump administration for their actions, vowing to challenge any unlawful terminations of federal employees.
A National Treasury Employees Union chapter advised members not to respond to the email, noting that OPM directives not adopted by their employer, the FDA, do not create an obligation to respond. This action comes amidst Musk and the Department of Government Efficiency’s efforts to make cuts to the federal workforce and agencies such as USAID.
As of November 2024, over 3 million people were employed by the federal government. This move has sparked controversy and pushback from various sources. Musk’s demand for justification of work has been met with resistance and calls for protection of federal employees’ rights.
