Boeing is set to implement more layoffs at its sites in Huntsville, Alabama, and North Charleston, South Carolina in April. The Huntsville site will cut 71 employees, adding to the 158 layoffs from last month. In North Charleston, approximately 69 job cuts are expected, with an additional 8 employees impacted. This is the second round of layoffs at the South Carolina site, following 287 job cuts in January and February. The Huntsville site is involved in U.S. space and defense programs, including the Artemis space launch system program for NASA. Boeing cited the need for workforce adjustments to drive efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
The company has already mitigated a majority of its previously announced 10% workforce reduction, affecting approximately 17,000 employees globally. Boeing has faced financial challenges, including a $11.8 billion net loss in 2020, largely due to a strike by labor union workers and costs associated with layoffs. The company stated that it continues to adjust workforce levels to align with financial realities and prioritize key areas.
