A widespread recall of milkshakes has been initiated due to an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes, resulting in 11 deaths and numerous hospitalizations across 21 states. The recall, initiated by Lyons Magnus in response to a recall from Prairie Farms, involved all 4 oz. packs of Lyons ReadyCare and Sysco Imperial Frozen Supplemental Shakes. Many of the affected individuals were residents in long-term care facilities or hospital patients where the milkshakes were available. The FDA first became aware of the outbreak in November 2021, with some cases dating back seven years.
Symptoms of Listeriosis, a listeria infection, can appear within two to 10 weeks after consumption of contaminated food and may include fever, muscle aches, nausea, and in severe cases, confusion, stiff neck, and convulsions. Pregnant women, individuals over 65, and those with weakened immune systems are at higher risk of complications from the infection.
This is not the first time listeria has caused outbreaks related to ready-to-eat products, as demonstrated by a previous outbreak in which an infant died and 10 adults became ill from consuming contaminated meat products in four states last year. The recall of the milkshakes serves as a crucial reminder of the importance of food safety measures to prevent the spread of harmful pathogens.
