Hanan Shaheen, a Palestinian American woman, testified in the trial of Joseph Czuba, who is accused of fatally stabbing her son, Wadee Alfayoumi, and severely injuring her in an attack motivated by hate for Muslims. Shaheen described how Czuba had stabbed her multiple times while Wadee watched in fear. Czuba had displayed animosity towards the family after the eruption of the war between Israel and Hamas in 2023, telling them Muslims were not welcome in his home. The attack occurred at the residence in Plainfield Township, where the family had been renting two rooms from Czuba and his wife.
Shaheen, who was repeatedly stabbed, managed to call 911 while locked in a bathroom as she heard her son pleading for the attack to stop. Wadee was pronounced dead at the hospital after being stabbed 26 times. Graphic evidence was presented in court, including images of Shaheen’s wounds and police body-cam footage showing the aftermath of the attack.
Prosecutors argued that Czuba’s actions were fueled by fear related to the Middle East war and hatred towards Muslims. Czuba has been charged with murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery, and two counts of a hate crime. Shaheen has also filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Czuba and his wife. The trial, expected to last a week, involves a jury of nine men and three women from Will County, who were instructed not to follow news about the case. Shaheen’s attorneys are seeking justice for the tragic events that occurred.
