Armed gangs in Haiti’s capital of Port-au-Prince launched a fresh attack in the Delmas 30 neighborhood, causing residents to flee and resulting in deaths. This ongoing conflict has displaced over 1 million Haitians, nearly 10% of the population. Police did not respond to requests for comment, leaving residents feeling panicked and unsure of what to do next.
Local resident Alex Josue reported that around 15 people were killed in the recent attack, with horrific details of people being burned alive in front of their children. The armed gangs have been described by local rights group RNDDH as operating with a consistent modus operandi of murder, arson, rape, and other violent acts.
The gangs’ attacks have caused residents to flee and seek refuge in unlikely places, with reports of multiple people being killed or injured in the recent violence. In Delmas 30, residents were seen fleeing with belongings on their heads, and one man was even pushing a corpse in a wheelbarrow.
A local resident, who asked not to be identified, appealed to Jimmy Cherizier, a former policeman leading one of the gangs involved, expressing confusion and fear as to why the violence was happening. The situation in Haiti remains dire as armed gangs continue to operate unchecked, causing widespread fear and displacement among the population.
