A Sydney nurse, Sarah Abu Lebdeh, has been charged with making threats after appearing in an online video stating she would not treat Israeli patients. She faces charges of threatening violence to a group, threatening to kill, and menancing and harassing through a carriage service. The charges carry a potential maximum penalty of 22 years in prison. Abu Lebdeh was released on bail and is set to appear in court on March 19.
Abu Lebdeh and another nurse, Ahmed Rashid Nadir, were suspended from Bankstown-Lidcombe Hospital after an online exchange with an Israeli influencer where Nadir suggested he had killed Israelis and Abu Lebdeh stated she wouldn’t treat Israeli patients. The hospital found no evidence that the nurses had harmed patients after examining patient records.
Antisemitic attacks and rhetoric have been on the rise in Australia, with incidents including vandalized homes, offices, and businesses, as well as the arson of a school and two synagogues. These crimes have targeted the Jewish community and have caused unrest in the nation. Nadir has not yet been interviewed by police in connection with the incident.
