A city manager in Beaufort, South Carolina, Scott Marshall, has made headlines by calling President Donald Trump a “bullying thug” on social media after a disagreement over federal funding for Title IX restoration. Marshall, who was hired by Beaufort two years ago, posted his criticism of Trump on his personal Facebook page, not using taxpayer resources.
However, the issue arose when Marshall suggested that he hoped “the ghosts of Lincoln and Reagan choke (Trump) in his sleep” in response to a comment on his post, sparking controversy. Marshall, a former employee of disgraced Beaufort County administrator Eric Greenway, has a history of bringing politics to the workplace and pushing for compulsory coronavirus vaccines.
As a result of his comments, Marshall’s Facebook page has been removed, and he has acknowledged it was a mistake in judgment. Beaufort County, a Republican stronghold where Trump won with 56.63% of the vote, remains divided over the issue. First district congresswoman Nancy Mace also carried the county with 59.66% of the vote.
While Marshall has the right to express his political views, his comments drew strong reactions due to their tone and implications. The incident sheds light on the ongoing political tension in the region and the impact of social media commentary by public officials.
