South Carolina nurse receives prestigious international award

Seneca, South Carolina, – Ashley Smith, a nurse manager at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital, has been awarded the prestigious DAISY Award for her outstanding dedication to patient safety. The award, given by the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), recognizes Smith’s commitment to improving patient and workforce safety within the healthcare system.

Smith, who works in the rapid assessment unit at Prisma Health Oconee Memorial Hospital, was chosen out of roughly 20,000 candidates for the honor. Her efforts have led to an impressive 20 percent reduction in fall rates on her unit, showcasing her ability to measurably improve patient safety. These improvements have had a positive impact on the entire 18-hospital health system.

Patricia McGaffigan, the IHI’s senior advisor for safety and president of its certification board for professionals in patient safety, commended this year’s honorees for their contributions to system-wide, and even nationwide, safety improvements. McGaffigan highlighted how these nurses are not only saving lives but also shaping systems of safer care, truly embodying the spirit of The DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses in Patient Safety.

The award will be presented to Smith at the IHI Patient Safety Congress in March. Smith’s dedication to patient safety and her measurable impact on improving safety standards make her a deserving recipient of this international recognition. Congratulations to Ashley Smith for her outstanding achievement in patient safety.
