The Port of Neom, located within the futuristic city of Oxagon in Saudi Arabia, has undergone significant development since its opening in August 2022. The port is expected to become a central hub for shipping, manufacturing, and information technology, with a capacity to handle 12 million TEUs annually. The port’s infrastructure, including access channels, has been designed with a focus on sustainability, using zero-discharge dredging techniques and reusing materials for land reclamation.
Oxagon, the city in which the port is located, aims to be a sustainable hub for clean energy manufacturing and advanced technology. The city plans to produce carbon-free hydrogen fuel and host a net-zero AI data center. Additionally, Oxagon is implementing training programs to include Saudi women in advanced container crane operations. Neom, the larger region encompassing Oxagon, is envisioned as a cutting-edge destination for urban living, technology, and tourism, with projects like The Line and Desert Rock in development.
However, Neom has faced controversy following a documentary alleging worker fatalities during the construction of the region as part of Saudi Vision 2030. While the claim of 21,000 deaths since 2017 has sparked concern, Saudi Arabia’s National Council for Occupational Safety and Health asserts that the country’s work-related fatality rate is relatively low compared to global standards. The documentary’s figures, although plausible given the size of Saudi Arabia’s labor force, have not been independently verified by other sources.
