White House confirms FBI has returned records from Mar-a-Lago search to Trump

The White House announced that the FBI had returned boxes of documents taken during a search of Donald Trump’s Florida property after he left office. Trump celebrated the return and claimed he did nothing wrong. The White House loaded roughly 15 boxes onto Air Force One and stated that they were Trump’s property taken during “unlawful and illegal raids.” Counselor to the president Alina Habba criticized the special counsel who probed Trump and stated that the documents were irrelevant and needed to be returned. A federal judge dismissed Trump’s case last year, finding that the investigation violated the law. The charges against Trump included retaining national defense information, making false statements, and conspiring to obstruct justice. The prosecution of Trump’s co-defendants was also terminated by the Justice Department. The FBI search of Trump’s property in 2022 led to the seizure of a trove of classified materials. Trump’s charges were dropped after he won the presidential election last year, following a policy against prosecuting a sitting president. Trump had pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing. The investigation was considered a political attack by the former administration.
