Former South Carolina football star Deebo Samuel has been traded to the Washington Commanders after spending six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers. The news was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Samuel, an All-Pro and Pro Bowler in 2021, has dealt with minor injuries in recent seasons but remains the NFL’s all-time leader in wide receiver rushing touchdowns with 20. Throughout his career as a pro, Samuel has accumulated nearly 6000 yards from scrimmage and 42 total scores.
Moving to Washington will see Samuel transition from a struggling NFC contender to a team on the rise in the conference. With talented quarterback Jayden Daniels and fellow star wide receiver Terry McLaurin alongside him, Samuel will not be tasked with carrying the entire receiving load for the Commanders. His versatility will play a key role in the team’s offensive strategy.
If he does not sign an extension with Washington, Samuel will become a free agent after the 2025 season. The 49ers allowed him to seek a trade this offseason. During his time at South Carolina, Samuel was a standout receiver and returner, finishing with over 2200 yards of offense, 148 receptions, and 23 touchdowns. He also holds the Gamecocks record for four kickoff returns for touchdowns.
