Firefighters work to contain wildfires in North and South Carolina – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Wildfires in North and South Carolina have prompted evacuations as crews work to contain the blazes amid dry conditions and gusty winds. In South Carolina, Gov. Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency as more than 175 fires burned 6.6 square miles. Residents in Carolina Forest area were ordered to evacuate, but by late Sunday afternoon, they were allowed to return home. The fire burned 2.5 square miles with 30 percent containment.

In North Carolina, fire crews are working to contain multiple wildfires burning in four forests with the largest fire at Uwharrie National Forest. The town of Tryon in Polk County urged residents to evacuate as a fire rapidly spread, burning about 500 acres with zero containment.

Both states are conducting water drops and back-burning operations to stop the fires from spreading. The cause of the fires remains unknown. It is expected that evacuations will be lifted once containment is achieved, and residents can expect a lot of smoke during these operations.
