Wildfires Force Evacuations, Declare State of Emergency in North and South Carolina

Parts of the Southeastern United States are on high alert following wildfires in the Carolinas that have prompted evacuations and threatened homes. In South Carolina, over 175 fires have burned 4,200 acres, with one near Myrtle Beach, a popular tourist destination. Governor Henry McMaster declared a state of emergency and banned outdoor burning until further notice to support firefighters. In North Carolina, preliminary reports indicate over 230 fires have scorched around 1,300 acres, though most were small and not threatening structures. Officials are urging residents not to burn due to ongoing dangerous conditions, despite calmer winds and cooler temperatures expected. The North Carolina Department of Public Safety warned that even with lighter winds, dry conditions and low humidity create high fire danger throughout the state. It is crucial for residents to remain vigilant as firefighters work to contain the blazes in the coming days.
