30 officers implicated in organizing ‘gladiator fights’ among minors in L.A.-area juvenile detention center

California’s attorney general unveiled an indictment charging 30 detention officers from a Los Angeles-area juvenile hall with child abuse for allegedly allowing and promoting gladiator-style fights among youths. The officers supposedly stood by while children and teenagers engaged in fights at Los Padrinos Juvenile Hall, resulting in physical injuries. The fights, numbering at least 69 in the second half of 2023, were brought to light after a video surfaced in January 2024. The officers are accused of overseeing fights instead of intervening, exploiting the vulnerability of the victims and their position of trust. The defendants face felony child abuse charges and potential prison time if convicted.

The L.A. County Deputy Probation Officers Union expressed support for the officers and emphasized their innocence until proven guilty. The union highlighted the challenges faced by these professional peace officers in maintaining discipline among young people accused of violent crimes. However, L.A. County Supervisor Janice Hahn stressed the need for a change in the culture of county probation officers and expressed readiness to terminate any guilty individuals.

The defendants have been placed on unpaid leave, and some have already been arraigned. The indictment sheds light on the alleged abuse occurring within the juvenile facility and underscores the importance of accountability and reform within the county probation system. The attorney general’s office emphasized the need to address such misconduct and ensure the safety and well-being of children and teens in custody.
