Large wildfires continue to burn in North and South Carolina as firefighters work to contain the flames. Most fires that broke out over the weekend have been contained or controlled, with only one active fire remaining in Horry County near Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire has grown to nearly 2,060 acres and is 30 percent contained. The South Carolina Forestry Commission is creating a perimeter around the fire to prevent it from spreading, utilizing bulldozers and fire suppression helicopters.
In North Carolina, the largest fire is burning in Polk County and is 593 acres in size, 63 percent contained. The North Carolina Forest Service warns that significant storm debris from Hurricane Helene in September 2024 has increased fuel for wildfires in western North Carolina. The National Weather Service has issued special weather statements warning of dry fuels and dangerous fire behavior in both states.
Looking ahead, above-average temperatures are expected in both states through March 17, with above-average precipitation. Residents are urged to be diligent in preventing outdoor fires, especially yard debris burns.
