Potential sale of 5 federal properties in South Carolina raises concerns in Spartanburg Politics

The historic 50,000-square-foot Donald Stuart Russell Federal Courthouse and Post Office in Spartanburg, South Carolina, has been listed on the U.S. General Services Administration’s “non-core property list.” The list, which originally contained over 440 federal properties, has since been reduced to 320 and then taken down from the GSA website. This list does not necessarily mean that the properties are for sale, but the administration is open to receiving compelling offers.

Spartanburg County Councilman David Britt is against selling the federal courthouse in Spartanburg, citing its importance to the local community. In the past, efforts were made to keep federal courthouses open in Spartanburg and Anderson due to the economic impact on local businesses.

Other federal properties listed included the G. Ross Anderson Jr. Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse in Anderson, the Matthew J. Perry Jr. Courthouse parking garage in Columbia, and the Strom Thurmond U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building in Columbia. The listing of these properties comes as part of an effort to reduce government spending and maximize the value of federal real estate for the benefit of taxpayers.
