Connecticut police rescue woman kidnapped 25 years ago when she was a toddler

Connecticut police have located a woman, Andrea Michelle Reyes, who was kidnapped 25 years ago from New Haven as a toddler. Andrea was taken from her mother, Rosa Tenorio, in October 1999, when she was almost 2 years old. It was suspected at the time that Rosa fled to Mexico with Andrea, and Andrea’s father was unable to locate them despite multiple trips to Mexico. The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children had released a post about Andrea in an effort to find her.

The case went cold until 2023, when Detective Kealyn Nivakoff from the New Haven Police Department special victims unit began reinvestigating. She determined that Andrea, now in her 20s, was living in Puebla, Mexico. With the help of Othram, a DNA testing company, Nivakoff confirmed Andrea’s identity, leading her to reunite with her father after almost 25 years. The father’s identity has not been revealed for privacy reasons.

The arrest warrant for Rosa is still valid in the United States, as police suspect she is living in Mexico. Chief Karl Jacobson commended the hard work of the New Haven officers and detectives involved in solving Andrea’s case, highlighting the importance of never truly closing a cold case. This successful reunion is a result of the ongoing dedication of law enforcement to resolve cases and bring closure to families.
