First Firing Squad Execution Scheduled for South Carolina Prisoner

Brad Sigmon, a South Carolina man convicted of a 2002 double murder, is set to die by firing squad, a method that has never been used by the state before. The U.S. Supreme Court denied a request to halt the execution, scheduled for 6 p.m. at the Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia. Sigmon, 67, will be the oldest inmate executed by the state. His lawyer has requested clemency from Gov. Henry McMaster, arguing that Sigmon has transformed his life in prison.

South Carolina restarted executions in September after a 13-year pause, with Sigmon choosing the firing squad method over lethal injection or electrocution. The last firing squad execution occurred in 2010 in Utah. Witness accounts and expert opinions vary about the method’s humanity, with some questioning the abilities of the volunteer squad members.

The return of the firing squad hearkens back to earlier periods in American history, but its resurgence as an execution method is a new development. Sigmon’s case has reignited the debate over the death penalty and the various execution methods available.
