Owner of Aiken funeral home suspended by SC Funeral Board | Aiken Area Public Safety & Court News

The South Carolina Board of Funeral Service has temporarily suspended Cody Anderson’s funeral director/embalmer license. This action comes after Anderson pleaded guilty to a charge of conspiracy to commit bank fraud on February 11. However, his attorney stated that this plea is unrelated to his work as a licensed funeral director. Anderson had purchased George Funeral Home in 2018, and a management change was implemented in 2024 to ensure continued operation with dignity and compassion.

The charges against Anderson and his co-conspirator, Thomas Allen Bateman Jr., stemmed from an attempt to obtain the $20 million estate of Mary Margaret Wenzel Crandall after she died in 2022. Anderson was named the personal representative in Crandall’s will and stood to receive a portion of the estate, while Bateman was to receive the remainder. The plan failed when the validity of the will was successfully challenged by Crandall’s accountant and lawyer.

Rev. Scott Ayers has taken over the day-to-day management of the funeral home. Anderson’s attorney expressed that he regrets his involvement in the circumstances leading to the plea, but looks forward to resolving the issue with the Board. While Anderson’s license remains suspended, the funeral home aims to continue serving the Aiken community with the same dignity and compassion it has provided for the past 105 years.
