South Carolina Man Scheduled to Be Executed by Firing Squad for First Time in 15 Years

Brad Sigmon, a South Carolina man convicted of killing his ex-girlfriend’s parents with a baseball bat, is set to be executed by firing squad on Friday evening. Sigmon chose this method over other options offered by the state, such as the electric chair or lethal injection, which he considered to be worse. The use of a firing squad, a method with a violent history, has sparked debate among death penalty proponents regarding its humanity compared to other execution methods. Sigmon’s lawyers have raised concerns about the lack of transparency regarding the lethal injection drug.
If the U.S. Supreme Court does not grant him a reprieve, Sigmon’s only option for survival is clemency from Governor Henry McMaster. The execution will take place in the presence of witnesses, including family members of the victims and members of the media, behind bullet-resistant glass. South Carolina turned to the firing squad due to a lack of lethal injection drugs and difficulties obtaining them. This will be the first execution by firing squad in the U.S. since 2010.
