Residents of Carolina Forest in Myrtle Beach have experienced the dangers of wildfires due to mismanagement of timberland in Berkeley County. Andy Johnson from the S.C. Forestry Commission highlighted the lack of management on land previously owned by paper and timber companies, leading to problems like wildfires. Sean Phouksouvath, a 32-year-old resident, vividly recalls the wildfires of 2009 and 2013 that affected his community. When a recent wildfire threatened his neighborhood, he was prepared to evacuate with bags of clothes ready to go. It was a tense night as they watched firefighters work in their backyard through security cameras. Upon their return after evacuation, the smell of smoke was overwhelming, prompting them to go back to the hotel. As they resumed their daily routines, they planned to show appreciation to first responders who helped protect their home from the wildfire by delivering food on March 8. The experience served as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and fire prevention in the area.
