A brush fire on New York’s Long Island burned 400 acres and prompted a response from 80 fire departments and 600 personnel, but is now 80% contained, according to Suffolk County officials. The Westhampton Pines Fire, which erupted Saturday afternoon, is fully knocked down, with officials hoping for a controlled situation soon. New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued a prohibition on most types of outside fires in Long Island due to continued dry conditions.
The fire affected two commercial buildings, causing significant damage. Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire. In total, four wildfires burned around 600 to 700 acres in Suffolk County, with only the Westhampton blaze still burning by Sunday night. Two fire personnel were injured in the fires, but are recovering at home.
Local officials received calls of support from President Trump’s team, Gov. Hochul, and Sen. Schumer following the fires. Gov. Hochul declared a state of emergency in the county in response. Fire weather conditions were expected to improve in the Northeast, with temperatures decreasing and a possibility of rain in the coming days. The region affected extends to southeastern New York, northern New Jersey, and southern Connecticut, including Long Island and all five boroughs of New York City.
