Meta’s Community Notes on Facebook and Instagram to implement technology from Company X

Meta’s upcoming Community Notes feature will use technology developed by X, a company owned by Elon Musk, for its content moderation tool aimed at monitoring and combating misinformation. In a blog post, Meta revealed that the same open-source algorithm powering X’s Community Notes will be used for its own platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and Threads. This tool is set to replace third-party fact-checking in the U.S., with testing beginning next week. Contributors, who must meet certain requirements, will be able to submit notes on various forms of content, except for advertisements. Notes will provide context without affecting the visibility or sharing of content, and cannot be appealed.

About 200,000 people have signed up to become contributors for the Community Notes program, with a waitlist remaining open. Neil Johnson, an expert in online misinformation, cautioned that the Community Notes program is not a substitute for formal fact-checking, as it is an imperfect system that can be potentially exploited by groups with their own agendas. Meta stated that publishing a note will require agreement between different individuals to prevent organized campaigns from influencing the system.

Meta does not plan to release more technical details about Community Notes but may consider doing so in the future. The company aims to expand the program nationally once initial beta testing confirms its effectiveness, with continuous refinement and improvement. Ultimately, the goal is to combat misinformation and provide users with additional context without substantially impacting the sharing of content.
