Concerns rise as Israel bombs occupied West Bank, with some fearing a Gaza-like outcome

Since October 2023, Israel has dramatically increased its use of airstrikes in the occupied West Bank, a tactic that was previously rare in the region, sparking concerns that it is employing similar military tactics to those used in the Gaza Strip. According to B’Tselem, at least 69 airstrikes have been conducted in the West Bank, resulting in the deaths of 261 people, including 41 individuals under the age of 19. The number of casualties has continued to rise, with at least 28 people killed since January 19. This escalation in airstrikes is viewed as evidence of Israel’s increasingly destructive approach in the West Bank, with human rights groups criticizing the country’s actions following the ceasefire in Gaza on January 19. The spokesperson for B’Tselem described the current situation as the most severe and deadly use of airstrikes in the history of the occupation, even surpassing the violence seen during the Second Intifada in the early 2000s. The mounting civilian casualties, particularly among young people, have raised international concerns about Israel’s military operations in the West Bank and the potential impact on the already volatile situation in the region.
