York County launches South Carolina’s first all-girls flag football league

The Carolina Panthers have joined forces with York County middle schools to introduce the first all-girls flag football league in South Carolina. The league, consisting of 14 teams from various school districts, kicked off with a meeting at Dutchman Creek Middle School. Each team will play two games per week over a seven-week season, culminating in a tournament for an unofficial championship.

The ultimate goal is to expand the league to high schools in York County and work towards sanctioning the sport in South Carolina. Flag football is currently a varsity sport in 14 states and will debut in the 2028 Olympics. To support the York County league, the Carolina Panthers Charities donated $45,000 for uniforms, equipment, and coach/player development programs.

Riley Fields, Panthers Director of Community Relations, emphasized that the league will provide increased opportunities for girls in York County to participate in flag football and hopes it will lead to the growth of the sport in South Carolina. Middle schools participating in the league include Banks Trail, Oakridge, Castle Heights, Pleasant Knoll, Clover, Rawlinson Road, Dutchman Creek, Saluda Trail, Forest Creek, Springfield, Fort Mill, Sullivan, Gold Hill, and York Middle School.

This initiative marks a significant step forward in promoting gender diversity and sports participation in the community, with the potential for long-term impact on the landscape of high school sports in the state.
