Residents of Daniel Island, South Carolina gathered to mourn the loss of a beloved alligator named Walter, who had been a fixture in the community for over a decade. Walter was known for sunning himself by a pond at the apartment complex, becoming a local celebrity of sorts.
Despite being a cold-blooded animal, neighbors had grown attached to Walter and were saddened by his untimely death. The apartment complex had received complaints about the alligator, leading to his removal in accordance with state law.
Alligators are a protected species in South Carolina, but permits can be obtained to remove them if they pose a threat to humans. The community has been granted permits in the past to deal with nuisance alligators.
The property management expressed appreciation for the understanding of residents following Walter’s passing and reminded everyone to not feed wildlife and to refrain from interfering with displaced animals. The loss of Walter has left a void in the community, with residents fondly remembering the iconic alligator who was a part of their everyday lives.
