Cellphone records indicate that Betsy Arakawa, the wife of actor Gene Hackman, was alive a day after her estimated time of death, according to a New Mexico sheriff’s official. Their bodies were found at their Santa Fe home by maintenance workers on February 26, with one of their dogs also found dead. Arakawa was 65 years old and Hackman was 95. The cause of Arakawa’s death was determined to be hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, while Hackman’s cause of death was cardiovascular disease with Alzheimer’s disease as a contributing factor. Cloudberry, a private medical clinic, was contacted by Arakawa on the day of her estimated death, cancelling an appointment due to feeling unwell.
The investigation into their deaths is ongoing, with new cellphone records being considered. The clinic, Cloudberry, and its leadership have not yet responded to requests for comment. A judge has temporarily blocked the release of imagery of the couple’s bodies and the interior of their home, in response to a request from a personal representative of their estates. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for March 31.
Dr. Josiah Child, the leader of Cloudberry, stated that Arakawa had called the clinic regarding respiratory issues for an appointment on the day after her estimated death, and she initially reached out for a heart scan for Hackman. Cloudberry specializes in personalized concierge medicine and Dr. Child focuses on one-on-one patient care and managing the aging process.
