General Motors and Nvidia Corp. have announced a collaboration to utilize artificial intelligence, simulation, and accelerated computing technology in the development of next-generation vehicles, factories, and robots. Engineers from both companies will work together to create AI models using Nvidia’s Cosmos and Omniverse software to optimize GM’s factory planning and robotics. GM will also implement Nvidia’s Drive AGX for in-vehicle hardware for advanced driver assistance systems.
The partnership aims to leverage AI to create digital twins of assembly lines, allowing for virtual testing and production simulations to reduce downtime and improve safety and efficiency in GM’s assembly plants. GM Executive Vice President Jens Peter “JP” Clausen emphasized the importance of innovation in enhancing safety and quality while reducing costs. The integration of AI technology will also help minimize ergonomic stressors, improve workplace safety, and enhance quality in manufacturing plants.
Through the combination of AI and machine learning, potential leaks in battery packs can be quickly identified for repairs, while robotics and AI tools can inspect welds and paint coats to enhance the quality of vehicles. GM CEO Mary Barra highlighted the importance of AI in optimizing manufacturing processes and empowering the workforce to focus on craftsmanship.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that they are transforming transportation through the use of AI in both vehicles and manufacturing facilities. The collaboration aims to unlock new levels of innovation in vehicle manufacturing and beyond by merging technology with human ingenuity.
