Parents of missing Pitt student Sudiksha Konanki plead with Dominican Republic police to formally declare her deceased

The family of missing University of Pittsburgh student Sudiksha Konanki has requested the Dominican Republic National Police to declare her dead, as her body has not been found despite an extensive search. Konanki, a junior in biology, disappeared during spring break while in the Caribbean island nation. She was last seen on the beach with friends, but stayed behind with people she met on the trip and vanished after 4:15 a.m. on March 6. The last person to have seen her, Joshua Riibe, has had his passport confiscated by Dominican authorities as part of the investigation, but no signs of violence were found at the beach. Riibe recounted being with Konanki in waist-deep water before a wave took them out to sea, leading to him getting her back to shore before she disappeared. Authorities in the Dominican Republic have noted that no one is considered a suspect in her disappearance, and U.S. authorities have classified it as a missing persons case rather than a criminal matter. The hotel where Konanki was staying confirmed that red flags, indicating strong currents and high waves, were flying when she disappeared. Riibe remains confined to the hotel and under police escort, asserting his willingness to assist in the investigation. Konanki’s family has sent a letter requesting a declaration of her death, as the search for her continues.
