Vigil held for Walter the alligator at South Carolina apartment complex

A beloved alligator named Walter, who had been a fixture at an apartment complex on Daniel Island in South Carolina for over a decade, was killed following complaints from residents. The community held a vigil to honor Walter, with many expressing their love for the animal who had become a part of their lives. Despite being a wild animal, Walter was known for being docile and friendly towards residents.

The property management explained that Walter’s death was carried out in accordance with state law and that the decision was made after careful consideration of the safety of the residents. Alligators are protected species, but permits can be issued to remove or kill them if they pose a threat to humans. In the past decade, there have been several fatalities due to alligator attacks in South Carolina.

The community has been urged to refrain from feeding wildlife and to contact authorities if they encounter displaced animals. Residents are asked to respect the laws and regulations in order to ensure the safety of both people and wildlife in the area.
