UCLA Faces Lawsuit from Pro-Palestinian Activists Claiming Civil Rights Violations at Campus Protests

More than 30 pro-Palestinian activists have filed a civil rights lawsuit against UCLA, claiming that the university violated their rights during demonstrations at a campus encampment last year. The plaintiffs allege that they were deprived of their rights to assemble, speak, learn, and organize freely and safely, resulting in life-altering injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. The lawsuit, filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court, lists 35 plaintiffs, including students, faculty members, and legal observers. The lawsuit also names law enforcement agencies and individuals as defendants, accusing them of using excessive force and unlawfully arresting protesters. The plaintiffs describe a violent attack by counterprotesters at the encampment, alleging that police and private security did not intervene to protect them. Personal testimonies included in the lawsuit detail injuries inflicted upon the protesters, such as broken bones and chemical burns. The lawsuit seeks monetary damages for both physical and psychological injuries. The University of California president’s office is gathering information about the lawsuit, stating that they have implemented reforms to promote safety and combat harassment and discrimination on UC campuses. The Los Angeles Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
