Family of woman killed during overnight prison visit demands suspension of visitations.

The family of Tania Thomas, who was strangled by her husband Anthony Curry during an overnight visit at Mule Creek State Prison in California, is calling for an end to such visits after another woman, Stephanie Dowells, was killed under similar circumstances. The Amador County Coroner’s Office ruled Dowells’ death a homicide, but no one has been charged in her killing. Despite the rare occurrence of violent acts during family visits at the prison, the families of both women are calling for changes to the eligibility rules for visitors and increased safety measures during unsupervised visits.

Curry, who is already serving a life sentence for attempted murder, disappeared after getting Thomas pregnant, only to be found with another woman who was later shot and seriously injured. Thomas, who had lupus and required regular dialysis, was working as a mentor for developmentally delayed adults at the time of her death. The family is questioning why it took months for Curry to be charged with murder in connection to Thomas’ killing.

The families of both women believe Curry and Dowells’ husband, David Brinson, who was convicted of murdering four men during a robbery, should not have been allowed the visits due to their violent criminal histories. They are calling for changes to the prison’s visitation policies to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
