Empty nester transforms her home to better suit her lifestyle

Interior designer Holly Gagne has transformed a circa-1880 Greek Revival home in Newburyport into an elegant space that reflects the owner’s love for the outdoors. The design concept, ‘elegant outdoors,’ brings natural materials, clean lines, and an artistic touch to the home. Premier Builders helped create a white oak pedestal table with the owner’s kids’ initials engraved on top.

Gagne reconfigured the first-floor layout to better suit the owner’s lifestyle as an empty nester. By removing walls and a chimney, the kitchen now offers a more social setup for entertaining. The addition of a center island and modern windows brings natural light into the space. The kitchen features rift-cut white oak cabinets and ribbed white porcelain tiles, creating a modern and airy feel.

The design also includes a small but functional mudroom/laundry area and an outdoor bathing area with slatted cedar siding and a metal roof. The outdoor shower and galvanized steel tank provide a place for the homeowner to enjoy the outdoors.

The living room, primary bedroom, and guest room have all been upgraded with thoughtful design elements that are both calming and organized. The guest room features custom cabinetry, creating a boutique hotel vibe.

Overall, the redesign of this historic home successfully blends the owner’s love for nature with elegant and modern design elements, creating a space that is both functional and visually appealing.
