Figure skater changes flight after parents died in D.C. plane crash

Maxim Naumov, a figure skater who recently placed fourth at the U.S. Figure Skating Championship, suffered a tragic loss when his parents, former Olympians Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, died in a midair collision in Washington, D.C. that killed 67 people, including 28 members of the skating community. Naumov’s parents, who were Russian Olympians and world champions, changed flights before the accident, and Naumov never received his usual call from his mother upon landing. After their death, Naumov performed for the first time at the “Legacy on Ice” event in Washington, D.C., where he skated from his heart and fell to his knees in an emotional tribute to the lives lost. Naumov has not yet decided on his future in the sport but is currently an alternate for the U.S. national team and has taken over the youth academy program at the Skating Club of Boston that his parents founded. He credits his parents with shaping him into the person he is today, saying their love and attention to detail was evident in every stage of his life. Despite the immense grief, Naumov believes the only way out is to keep going, and he finds overwhelming love and emotion in his skating performances.
