Progress Reported in Containment of North Carolina Wildfires as Fire Danger Persists
Firefighters in the North Carolina mountains have announced progress on containing two of the largest wildfires burning in the region. Despite this, fire danger remains high due to dry and windy conditions. In South Carolina, two fires have nearly doubled in size, but crews have managed to keep the blazes away from homes and structures.
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from their homes in both states as wildfires continue to spread in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Fallen trees from Hurricane Helene are fueling the fires and hindering firefighting efforts.
The North Carolina Forest Service reported that the Black Cove Fire and Deep Woods Fire are now over 10% contained, marking a significant improvement. Around 250 homes have been evacuated in Polk County, with about two dozen structures destroyed. Only one injury has been reported.
Authorities are urging the public to heed burn bans and stop setting fires, as the weather conditions continue to pose a challenge for firefighters. Rain is expected in the forecast, but it may not be enough to fully extinguish the fires, requiring a sustained effort from firefighting teams.
