South Carolina House to vote on bill concerning a Lowcountry School District

The State House of Representatives recently passed House Bill 4014, which aims to abolish the Charleston County School District Constituent Board and transfer its powers to the Board of Trustees. The current role of the constituent board includes handling disciplinary hearings, student transfers, and school zoning in separate sub-districts. The bill passed through the House with a voice vote of yes and will now move on to the Senate for further consideration.

One constituent board member, Reverend Charles Glover, expressed concern that abolishing the board will have negative consequences for students and their education. However, Representative Tom Hartnett expressed confidence that the bill will go through the Senate smoothly, as it is a local uncontested bill that affects a limited area like Charleston County.

The next steps for the bill will involve it being assigned to a committee and then a subcommittee in the Senate, where any necessary discussions and changes will be made. Eventually, the bill will go back to the Senate for a second and third reading before potentially becoming law.
