Yolanda Saldívar, convicted of murdering Selena, has parole denied

Yolanda Saldívar was denied parole by the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles for the 1995 murder of Tejano music icon Selena. Saldívar was convicted of fatally shooting Selena at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 30 years. Selena’s family had accused Saldívar of embezzling money before firing her from her positions as president of Selena’s fan club and manager of her clothing boutiques. Saldívar maintained that she did not intend to kill Selena and claimed the gun went off accidentally. A jury found her guilty of first-degree murder in 1995.

Selena, also known as the “Queen of Tejano” music, was a talented singer with hits like “Dreaming Of You” and “No Me Queda Mas.” Her life was portrayed in the 1997 film “Selena,” starring Jennifer Lopez. Saldívar’s parole petition was denied due to the brutality and violence of the crime, indicating a continued threat to public safety. Saldívar spoke out about the killing in a 2024 documentary, denying embezzlement accusations and suggesting Selena had an extramarital affair. Some fans were outraged by the documentary before its release. Despite the denial of parole, Saldívar will have another parole review in March 2030.
