Crews from across South Carolina are working diligently to control two wildfires in the upstate region that have been burning for 10 days and have consumed over 15,000 acres. The South Carolina Forestry Commission has reported an improvement in containment levels, with more than 30% of the Table Rock fire and over 60% of the Persimmon Ridge fire now contained.
The challenging mountainous terrain in which the fires are burning has made it difficult to combat the flames, requiring handlines and manual efforts due to the inability to use heavy equipment like bulldozers. Firefighters from various departments have been working tirelessly to contain the fires, rotating crews every 24 hours.
Fortunately, as of Monday afternoon, no structures have been damaged by the fires. The recent increase in humidity and rain has aided in the suppression efforts, providing some relief to the firefighters. The South Carolina forestry commission expects vegetation to regrow quickly once the fires are extinguished, with state parks reopening soon after the damage has been assessed.
