What led Aaliyah Chavez to choose Oklahoma over South Carolina? How the top recruit made her decision

Aaliyah Chavez, the No. 1 women’s basketball recruit in the country, has announced her decision to attend the University of Oklahoma starting next fall. Despite receiving offers from 27 teams, including reigning national champion South Carolina, Chavez has opted to join an Oklahoma team that had a successful first season in the SEC with a 27-8 record.

Chavez, a highly talented point guard, averaged 34.9 points and 9.1 rebounds during her senior season, showcasing her star-caliber talent. She chose Oklahoma because she believes their style of play aligns with her own, noting their fast-paced offense that is always ready to shoot. Oklahoma had the fifth-best offense in the country this year, averaging 84.7 points per game.

Originally from Lubbock, Texas, Chavez played for Monteray Lady Plainsmen high school, where she led her team to a state championship this year. With an impressive high school career stat line of 4,796 points, 1,279 rebounds, and 771 assists, Chavez has solidified her reputation as a top recruit in the class of 2025.

As the top recruit in the country, Chavez is expected to secure a lucrative Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deal. Sources suggest that her camp was seeking a seven-figure deal, which may have impacted some interested programs. It is anticipated that Chavez will sign with Nike’s Jordan Brand, who already have a partnership with the University of Oklahoma. Fans are eager to see Chavez bring her exceptional talent to the Sooners next season and make an impact in the SEC.
