Flowertown Festival showcases Summerville nonprofit’s art barrier-breaking initiative

The final day of the Flowertown Arts and Crafts Festival in Downtown Summerville was a vibrant celebration of creativity and community, organized by the non-profit organization Beyond BASIC Lifeskills. Through their social enterprise, Beyond Handcrafted, team members with intellectual disabilities create unique pottery pieces, showcasing their talents and breaking barriers in the community. Ceramics Manager Norah Clements highlighted the adaptive features of the pottery that allow teammates to create beautiful work despite mobility challenges. Volunteer Joanna Goncalez emphasized the importance of inclusion and empowerment for individuals with disabilities, stating that intellectual disabilities do not define or limit a person’s capabilities. The partnership with the YMCA and participation in events like Flowertown promote community engagement, job skills development, and overall independence for Beyond BASIC teammates. Proceeds from the festival will support YMCA programs that focus on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Beyond BASIC is dedicated to redefining independence through creativity, connection, and inclusion, proving that everyone has the potential to thrive.
