Better circumstances eliminate burn bans

After a week of over 100 wildfires in the Carolinas, the South Carolina Forestry Commission has lifted burn bans in 44 counties due to improved conditions. The bans remain in place in Horry and Georgetown County where wildfires are still active.

In Horry County, the 2,000+ acre Covington Drive Fire near Myrtle Beach is the largest current incident in the state. Meanwhile, in Georgetown County, a wildfire continues to threaten residential areas.

Despite the lifting of bans in many areas, officials are urging caution and reminding the public to notify the Forestry Commission before conducting any outdoor burning. Precautions and notification procedures can be found on the SCFC website.

The commission’s decision to lift the bans comes as a result of a decrease in dry fuel and gusty winds, making conditions safer for controlled burning. However, residents in areas where bans have been lifted are still urged to be vigilant and take necessary precautions when burning.

The Forestry Commission is working to ensure the safety of residents and protect the environment as they continue to monitor and manage wildfires across the state. It is important for residents to stay informed and follow the recommendations of officials to prevent further wildfires.
