Appeals court blocks reinstatement of 24,000 federal employees

A federal appeals court has halted a lower court’s ruling that ordered the government to rehire around 24,000 probationary workers. The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals stated that the government is likely to succeed in showing the district court lacked jurisdiction over the workers’ claims. The ruling will pause the rehiring of the workers until the government’s full appeal is decided. This decision effectively ends the injunction requiring the workers to be reinstated. The 4th Circuit decision stemmed from a federal judge in Maryland who agreed with a coalition of states that argued the government did not follow proper procedures in firing the employees. The judge stated that the government conducted mass layoffs without providing advanced notice, claiming to have dismissed each employee for individualized reasons when in reality, they were all just fired collectively. The government’s argument was refuted by the judge’s ruling. The Supreme Court also issued a similar ruling halting orders to reinstate around 16,000 workers that the Trump administration had sought to fire. Both rulings highlight the ongoing legal battles surrounding the government’s procedures for dismissing employees and the agencies’ compliance with proper protocols.
